You might know that future careers are almost entirely dependent on strong mathematics skills.<\/p>\n<p>What you don\u2019t know is whether your involvement with your child\u2019s mathematics development is helping or hindering them.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s okay \u2014 because the research can\u2019t seem to find an answer either.<\/p>\n<p>While findings generally<strong>\u00a0lean towards positive outcomes<\/strong>\u00a0from parents getting involved in their kids\u2019 education, this complex question has almost endless factors to consider including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>parents views on education<\/li>\n<li>parents success with education<\/li>\n<li>genetics<\/li>\n<li>socioeconomic standing<\/li>\n<li>access to education<\/li>\n<li>cultural emphasis on education<\/li>\n<li>location<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But there&#8217;s good news.<\/p>\n<p>Studies that showed parental involvement with children&#8217;s education as\u00a0beneficial had a few elements in common.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to be confident, you&#8217;re actually helping the next time your kids pull out their workbooks, here&#8217;s what you should keep in mind:<\/p>\n<\/div><style type=\"text\/css\">@media only screen and (max-width:768px) {.fusion-title.fusion-title-1{margin-top:11px!important;margin-bottom:11px!important;}}<\/style><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-1 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"margin-top:22px;margin-right:0px;margin-bottom:22px;margin-left:0px;\"><h2 class=\"title-heading-left fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"margin:0;--fontSize:24;line-height:1.95;\">Don&#8217;t be a dictator<\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><p>Dictator parents are\u00a0<em>authoritarian<\/em>\u00a0(controlling) and\u00a0<em>punitive<\/em>\u00a0(punishing) \u2014 they try to control their children\u2019s actions and punish them for not staying within these boundaries.<\/p>\n<p>In cases where parental involvement has had no impact (or even detrimental impact \u2014 taking their children\u2019s learning backwards!), dictator parents usually showed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>low emotional support (no encouragement, no tracking or value placed on wellbeing)<\/li>\n<li>high psychological control (directing and enforcing thinking)<\/li>\n<li>high behavioural control (telling kids what to do, how to do it and when to do it).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They also used punishment as their main motivator (if you don\u2019t do this, you will get punished, and the reward for doing it is not being punished).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Put simply \u2014 you can\u2019t yell or bully your kids into being better.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no amount of punishment that will help them on a test, and there\u2019s no level of control you can muster to make them reach goals you\u2019ve set.<\/p>\n<p>There is a better way:<\/p>\n<\/div><style type=\"text\/css\">@media only screen and (max-width:768px) {.fusion-title.fusion-title-2{margin-top:11px!important;margin-bottom:11px!important;}}<\/style><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-2 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"margin-top:22px;margin-right:0px;margin-bottom:22px;margin-left:0px;\"><h2 class=\"title-heading-left fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"margin:0;--fontSize:24;line-height:1.95;\">Be a leader<\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-3\"><p>Leader parents are\u00a0<em>authoritative<\/em>\u00a0(dependable) and\u00a0<em>proactive<\/em>\u00a0(helpful) \u2014 they\u2019re someone their children can rely on for help when they need it.<\/p>\n<p>The opposite of their dictator counterparts, leader parents show:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>high emotional support (consistent encouragement and understanding of wellbeing)<\/li>\n<li>low psychological control (allow free and evolving thought, encourage questions)<\/li>\n<li>low behavioural control (provide the chance to make their own choices).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In an odd twist,\u00a0<strong>leader parents are less reliant on motivators<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s because leader parents nurture a life-changing mentality\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Support self-motivation<\/p>\n<p>There are two types of motivation \u2014 extrinsic (external) and intrinsic (internal).<\/p>\n<p>Extrinsic can be positive (like presents or sweets) or negative (yelling or banning\/grounding).<\/p>\n<p>Intrinsic is the more important of the two, and it revolves around the pleasure and pride in success. Where extrinsic motivators can run out (sweets don\u2019t last forever and voices can break), intrinsic motivation is a reliable and powerful force that pushes children to keep trying.<\/p>\n<p>Leader parents, whether aware of it or not, are nurturing the three characteristics that develop learners into self-motivators: competence, autonomy and relatedness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Competence:<\/strong>\u00a0This is your child feeling confident in their ability to do something well, or that they will be able to do it well in the future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Autonomy:<\/strong>\u00a0This is how independent your child feels, being able to face challenges in their own way, in their own time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Relatedness:<\/strong>\u00a0This is how relevant your child feels their work is, making a connection between what they&#8217;re doing and a greater purpose.<\/p>\n<p>While encouraging your kids to thrive with a self-motivation mindset means they\u2019ll rely on you less, there\u2019s still more you can do:<\/p>\n<\/div><style type=\"text\/css\">@media only screen and (max-width:768px) {.fusion-title.fusion-title-3{margin-top:11px!important;margin-bottom:11px!important;}}<\/style><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-3 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"margin-top:22px;margin-right:0px;margin-bottom:22px;margin-left:0px;\"><h2 class=\"title-heading-left fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"margin:0;--fontSize:24;line-height:1.95;\">Keep your involvement consistent<\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-4\"><p>It can be depressing thinking how you could be doing more when it comes to involvement \u2014 there\u2019s is always so much to do!<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s not about \u2018more\u2019 \u2014 it\u2019s about making sure you\u2019re doing what you can in the three areas of involvement that matter most:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Behavioural involvement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is where you\u2019re\u00a0<em>making connections<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>actively communicating<\/em>, both at home and school.<\/p>\n<p>At school, this might be setting up regular contact with your child\u2019s teacher, volunteering or taking part in events.<\/p>\n<p>At home, this means being available to help with homework, taking an active interest in what\u2019s going on at school and talking through challenges.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cognitive involvement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is where you\u2019re\u00a0<em>engaging your child\u2019s mind<\/em>\u00a0in their home life.<\/p>\n<p>It can be as simple as making sure they have access to books or providing them experiences like going to the museum or galleries, watching documentaries or taking part in workshops.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Personal involvement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is where you\u00a0<em>express your attitudes and expectations <\/em>around school and education.<\/p>\n<p>Parents can be especially vulnerable in this regard when it comes to mathematics.
