Whether our students are coming to a new class or resuming their old seats, their break has left them renewed, revitalised, and ready to learn. This clean slate is our opportunity to reignite, or even spark, their enthusiasm for mathematics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But we know it\u2019s not always that simple. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just as it\u2019s easy for students to lose their early drive and slowly slide into apathy, it\u2019s just as easy for us to slip back into old patterns and accept it. Seizing the opportunity while this small window is open and switching mathematics from \u2018ugh\u2019 to \u2018ugh-mazing\u2019 for our students is achievable \u2013 here\u2019s how:<\/p>\n<\/div><style type=\"text\/css\">@media only screen and (max-width:768px) {.fusion-title.fusion-title-1{margin-top:11px!important;margin-bottom:11px!important;}}<\/style><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-1 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"margin-top:22px;margin-right:0px;margin-bottom:22px;margin-left:0px;\"><h2 class=\"title-heading-left fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"margin:0;--fontSize:24;line-height:1.95;\">Model classes on growth mindset<\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><p>A study into modelling mathematics lessons on growth mindset revealed some interesting insights.<\/p>\n<p>Students tested with standard mathematics problems were <strong>more likely <\/strong>to get answers right but were <strong>far less<\/strong> motivated to complete the test. Students given the growth mindset test experienced the exact opposite. In fact, they grew <em>more motivated <\/em>to complete the test as they went on.<\/p>\n<p>What was the crucial difference in these tests?<\/p>\n<p>The first test was given in a format that students expected from standardised testing \u2013 solve the equation and you\u2019ll find the answer. The growth mindset-based test gave students the opportunity to explore, discover, test their thinking and reason out their answers. Piquing their curiosity proved to be the key in developing intrinsic motivation and excitement to learn.<\/p>\n<\/div><style type=\"text\/css\">@media only screen and (max-width:768px) {.fusion-title.fusion-title-2{margin-top:11px!important;margin-bottom:11px!important;}}<\/style><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-2 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"margin-top:22px;margin-right:0px;margin-bottom:22px;margin-left:0px;\"><h2 class=\"title-heading-left fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"margin:0;--fontSize:24;line-height:1.95;\">Nail the purpose for learning<\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-3\"><p>If a student is asking \u201cwhy are learning this?\u201d, it\u2019s a sign they aren\u2019t seeing the value in what they\u2019re learning \u2013 yet. Instead of snapping back with \u201c the syllabus demands it and there will be test on the topic at the end of the semester\u201d (yes, I\u2019ve actually heard this), having a concrete purpose for learning will turn this into a powerful moment of inspiration.<\/p>\n<p>After all \u2013 we all crave purpose to what we do, and students are no different. \u00a0As math teachers, there are plenty of ways we can ground our topics in real-world situations.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how answering the \u2018why\u2019 helps build enthusiasm:<\/p>\n<p><strong>It shows that it matters<\/strong> \u2013 showing how maths makes a difference to their lives and potentially the world guarantees student \u2018buy-in\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It makes it interesting<\/strong> \u2013 the scope becomes inspiring rather than \u2018do it and forget about it\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It makes students a part of something <\/strong>\u2013 connections made between the lesson and the bigger picture make it a group effort.<\/p>\n<p>And most importantly:<\/p>\n<p><strong>It makes it enjoyable<\/strong> \u2013 and the more enjoyable it is, the more willing they\u2019ll be to get involved. Turning passive participants into active participants is life changing.<\/p>\n<p>Think about it this way: You don\u2019t learn algebra to know values or trigonometry to find the volumes of containers. You use them to get to the moon.<\/p>\n<\/div><style type=\"text\/css\">@media only screen and (max-width:768px) {.fusion-title.fusion-title-3{margin-top:11px!important;margin-bottom:11px!important;}}<\/style><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-3 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"margin-top:22px;margin-right:0px;margin-bottom:22px;margin-left:0px;\"><h2 class=\"title-heading-left fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"margin:0;--fontSize:24;line-height:1.95;\">Give ownership where possible<\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-4\"><p>Autonomy is one of our students\u2019 most powerful desires. At this point in their lives they\u2019re living to their parents and the school\u2019s schedule, so they\u2019re curious and excited to exercise some independence.<\/p>\n<p>Giving them the chance to make their own choices, practice responsibility, and feel success independently allows them to take ownership over a small (and extremely important) part of their lives.<\/p>\n<p>Designing lessons with student choice in mind \u2013 \u2018you can try it this way or that way etc.\u2019 \u2013 opens new possibilities for developing curious minds.<\/p>\n<p>Remember \u2013 when students are told what to do, their pathway ends when the job is done. A single glance at a long list of incomprehensible problems for your students is enough to drain their energy and commit themselves to \u2018failure\u2019. That way, they save energy, save face, and can pretend like they never cared. Switching this thinking relies on tapping into an inherent belief that everyone can succeed. Our job is to create an opportunity for them to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Once they\u2019ve experienced this success, it\u2019s important to celebrate it. This creates the \u2018reward\u2019 part of motivation, kickstarting the positive cycle of \u2018it feels good to find success, and I can find success in mathematics\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/div><style type=\"text\/css\">@media only screen and (max-width:768px) {.fusion-title.fusion-title-5{margin-top:11px!important;margin-bottom:11px!important;}}<\/style><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-5 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"margin-top:22px;margin-right:0px;margin-bottom:22px;margin-left:0px;\"><h2 class=\"title-heading-left fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"margin:0;--fontSize:24;line-height:1.95;\">Strengthen relationships<\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-7\"><p>Emotional connections are powerful. Between us and our students, it creates a level of trust and understanding that allows for them to be vulnerable or be comfortable asking for help.<\/p>\n<p>Further, fostering peer-to-peer relationships nurtures further learning opportunities and support \u2013 sometimes outside of school hours.<\/p>\n<p>The simple truth is that we work harder for people we like. Their ability to take on emotional load, however, is much, much broader.<\/p>\n<p>Injecting your enthusiasm into lessons and topics is an emotional hook; it\u2019s the performance that draws them in,
